It is a rare disease of the liver and bile ducts that occurs in infants. Bile is a fluid cultivated by the liver to help digestion. The immune system can attack the bile ducts, but the trigger for this attack is so far unidentified. Bile drains from the liver through bile ducts to the small intestine, or duodenum, and mostly back to the bile ducts and liver. If the duct in the complex system becomes diseased or blocked, several serious diseases may result. Patients are treated with medications to increase bile flow from the liver, and antibiotics are used to treat the infection.

Surgery to drain bile from the liver when bile ducts are blocked. The procedure may help identify and remove gallstones from the bile duct. Biliary disorders due to gallstones can prevent by surgically removing the gallbladder. The formation of gallstones can also be prevented by eating a well-balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and exercising regularly.
